In our first unit of study, students will learn about Earth's surface. By the time the students have finished the unit, they should be able to explain the following BIG ideas:
· Modern technology has changed the way we view and map Earth.
· Minerals are the basic components of Earth.
· Rocks transform into other rocks as they move through the rock cycle.
· Rocks, fossils, and other types of natural evidence tell Earth's story.
· Society depends on natural resources for energy and materials.
The BIG ideas in the chapters support an understanding of the following Unifying Principles of Physical Science:
· Heat inside Earth and radiation from the sun provide energy for Earth's processes.
· Earth has changed over time and continues to change as a result of physical forces.
